USCG Safety Alert – programming MMSI into marine radios

The US Coast Guard issued a Safety Alert reminding the maritime community of the importance of programming the 9-digit Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) into marine communication devices, including marine radios equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and Automatic Identification System (AIS) equipment. In the event of a distress, marine communication devices with MMSI will automatically identify the vessel, thus enhancing the search and rescue effort.
