Vanuatu is an open registry and does not mandate that crews aboard Vanuatu flag vessels should be any particular nationality.
The Vanuatu crewing database contains over 20,000 working seafarers, less than 1% of whom are ni-Vanuatu.
There are many ni-Vanuatu ratings who have been trained and certificated at the Vanuatu Maritime College to STCW standards who are available for employment.
Vanuatu also has officer cadets under training. These cadets hope to become officers aboard Vanuatu flag vessels in the future, providing they can get seatime to complete their deck or engineer watchkeeper’s certificate.
We would like to see more of these seafarers, both cadets and ratings, employed aboard Vanuatu flag vessels and we would appreciate your response to the following questions:
