“The master of a fishing vessel was convicted in Canada of oil record book violations. Transport Canada issued a Media Release stating that the master of a fishing vessel was convicted of misreporting information in the ship's oil record book and failing to report a pollution incident. The vessel was found guilty of two counts of illegal discharge of pollutants. The master was fined C$20,000 and the vessel was fined C$40,000. This is the first time in Canada that a crewmember has been convicted of an oil record book violation.”
Just a reminder that fishing vessels must also comply with MARPOL requirements. Under Vanuatu law, masters and vessels may be fined up to $100,000 US for MARPOL violations.
